What I Do When I'm Having a Bad Day

by - May 22, 2019

This isn't my original idea, I was inspired by From Roses when I read her post and thought I could share how I cope with a bad day.
Ever since I can remember I have dealt with anxiety. Anxiety over literally everything. I always thought it was normal and that everybody felt the same way but they were just good at hiding it until I realized in my teenage years that I actually had a problem and that my crippling anxiety wasn't normal.
Over the years I've had to deal with it in my own way as I wasn't financially secure to visit a therapist and now at 22 I feel like I have a good routine to keep bad days to a minimum and when they happen, handle them in the best way possible.
Usually, bad days start early so I know how to tackle them before they get worse. It's important for me to relax and get my anxiety to a minimum or I'll get a terrible migraine, a side effect I've had for years.

Go on a walk with Kiko
It's always very helpful to get some physical exercise and to be among nature but walking Kiko has always been something I love to do. Seeing his tiny nose sniff every little thing, seeing his tail wagging when he sees another dog, seeing his little legs walk fast while his ears bounce up and down, those are all little things I love about our walks and they always get me in a better mood.

Keep work to a minimum
When I'm having a bad day it's easy to just relax and have fun all day and ignore work. If you have a day job, it's impossible to do but when we work from home it's easier. It might sound like a good idea to just take a day off but the fact is that work will pile up and the next day will most likely be very stressful because of that. My biggest tip is to take it easy but still do some work, your future self will thank you.

Get Creative
For me, doing something creative is very relaxing. It allows me to focus on what I'm doing and forget about the bad things going on in my mind. I like to draw, paint, edit pictures, colour books, paint my nails, decorate my bullet journal. Those are the things I like to do the most but if those aren't your cup of tea you can always go for something you like more like writing, making music, dancing, cooking, etc.

Be lazy
Watch YouTube videos or Netflix, play a videogame, take a long nap, binge-watch TV, do whatever the heck you want. On regular days, I always allow myself some time to be lazy but on a bad day, I take a little longer. Getting my mind busy with lazy things I love to do helps me lighten up my mood and I'm sure you agree.

Give me all the calories
Unlike most people, I actually enjoy eating healthy food. But just like everybody else, I also love junk food. And bad days are the perfect days to enjoy all the candy and chocolate I want. If you're more of a savory type of person then go for it. But don't forget that in order for your brain to work and make you happy, it needs energy so balance out the junk food with fruits and veggies to feed your brain while the sugar and salt fill your soul.

I hope you're having a great day,
Marta Ribeiro xx

  3. It is so important to take care of yourself! I've had anxiety since I can remember. Sometimes it is really horrible - I can't even go for a walk without feeling anxious and worrying over the silliest thing. It's a horrible burden...
