Tips For Starting a Blog

by - February 27, 2019

Online jobs are very inconsistent, one day you could be doing great and the next you're not doing so great. I believe one day platforms like YouTube and Instagram will eventually die down and people will move on to the next big thing. Blogs, on the other hand, I believe they'll always be part of our lives. Don't get me wrong, blogs used to be a much bigger platform than they are now but I feel like we can still be pretty successful today. How many times in our lives have we seen ourselves look things up on Google and end up in a blog? Many, I believe. And for that reason, I'm gonna share a few tips for people who want to start a blog, either as a hobby or to help your business or even to make blogging your business!

Catchy name
I personally believe blogs with a catchy name tend to be more easily remembered than blogs that are simply your name. Think of something that represents you, your life or how you're related to whatever your blog's topic is. Once you have something you like, Google it to make sure there's no other blog with the same name for not only legal reasons but also because it's way better to have your own thing and not copy somebody else.

Pick a topic
It's important to have a topic defined to attract readers. If people who visit your blog don't know what your focus is, you might lose readers because they won't know if they relate to your content or not because it's confusing. It's totally okay to have an "everything" blog as well just as long as you define that message and keep some common details about your content such as the style of the posts, the theme in your pictures, the language used, etc as to not confuse the reader with too much information.

Your own domain
I do not, and I repeat, I do not think it's strictly necessary to have your own domain right away. You can experiment for a few months or a year even and see how it goes and how you like what you're doing and then go for the domain. It's important to have it at some point because it looks more professional and it helps a lot more with your exposure because the link is easier to write down and for people to remember.

Your own email
Some domain companies do this as well so I'd get informed about it when you decide to get a domain. Much like the domain, your own email looks a lot more professional, not to mention how easy it is to filter emails. Before, when I had a Gmail, every email I got ended up there, social media emails, emails from companies, ads, etc. while now I have my own email and only people who want to contact me send stuff over there and I left the Gmail for social media accounts, newsletters, etc.

Nice theme
There are thousands of themes all over the internet and it's easy to find one, the hard part is picking one. Pick something that shows your personality and that is easy for your readers to navigate through your blog. If you know a thing or two about editing the theme you can even do a few changes and make it even more original but most themes out there for Blogger or WordPress make it easy for you to use the editing tools given by the platform.

Be original, be yourself, have fun
There's nothing more important than this. All of the things I said above are trivial compared to this. It's very important to have fun and be yourself. It may seem that you'll be more successful if you act like other successful bloggers but if you just stay true to yourself you'll see that you'll gain a following that loves your content and you'll have success too.

Keep it interesting
Not for the readers, for you. It's important to have this mindset right from the beginning. What's the point of having such a fun hobby/job if you're not gonna have fun with it? If you're not enjoying what you're doing anymore don't be scared to take a step back and do a hiatus or try different things. It's normal to fall into a routine and to end up with creative blocks, the important part is to lift yourself up and change things up to keep it interesting.

Careful with the personal info
Don't be afraid to show your true self and your personality. The only thing I believe you should be careful about is personal information. It's easy to get carried away when you don't have a big following and think it's okay to share some personal information because not that many people will see it but don't fall into that trap. Whether it's 10 or 10 million readers, don't share information that is too personal, that involves other people or that you might regret in the future. Always think twice before sharing.

I hope you're having a great day,
Marta Ribeiro xx
