Short or Long Nails? | Pros & Cons

by - November 01, 2018

When it comes to my nails I go back and forth between having long and short nails, much like my hair, once I get bored of having it long, I chop it all off. I'm lucky that my nails grow quickly so I can keep changing their length all the time and that they're strong enough to last being long until I cut them again.
After years of going back and forth, I think I have a solid opinion on both lengths. My favourite might be long nails but short nails have their magic too.

Long Nails
They look super pretty if they're shaped and painted right. They look chic and expensive and demonstrate confidence and self-assuredness.
More space for nail art! If you like doing nail art then having long nails is the way to go. They have more space for you to draw whatever you want and be more detailed in the designs you choose.
They're like an extension for your fingers. I can't tell you how many times I've used my nails to grab something I wouldn't have been able to with my fingers like hot things or really tiny things.
This might be a weird one and not everyone might share this opinion but I love the sound of long nails hitting something like my phone screen or a table. It's a really satisfying sound you can only make when they're long.

They bother a bit. When typing on a keyboard, when zipping up a jacket or jeans, basically anything that involves something small.
Bacteria. Under your nails, there's a lot of space for bacteria to settle and contaminate your food, open wounds, etc. You'll have to be careful and keep those nails clean.
Easy to break. The longest they are, the easier it is to tear them apart. I've lived some pretty horrific stories about nails breaking and it's definitely something to keep in mind. This one time, I accidentally broke a nail in half and the thing is, I didn't even realize it. I think I have a high pain tolerance because when it broke I didn't really pay much attention to it until a few seconds later when I felt my hand wet and looked at it and saw it drenched in blood. Yeah, not fun.
Sometimes, they're not allowed. Some jobs or schools don't allow long nails and then you'll have to go and cut them and maybe ruin something great you had going on.

Short Nails
They're so comfortable! You can do whatever you want, your nails will not get in the way.
Perfect for every job. Like I mentioned before, long nails sometimes are not allowed in certain jobs or schools so having short nails is already one step ahead and you won't have to spend your time redoing your nails because they're already short.
Classy and timeless. There's a very classy and chic vibe to short nails. They don't grab much attention, especially if you use colours that are a bit more simple like beiges and blushes.
Easy to maintain. There's not much to it, really. When it comes to short nails all you have to do is keep the length, have a good paint job and take care of your skin and cuticles. All can be done in 10 minutes.

They might be considered boring. Some people believe short nails are boring and not everyone feels comfortable with that. Some people like to stand out and nails are only one way of many to make yourself seen.
When you have short nails there's not much you can do. You can't really play around much with shapes or nail art because the surface is very small. You can try to do something small and dainty but there will be a lot of designs that are just impossible.
The transition is hard. Transitioning from short nails to long nails is a hard and time-consuming job. You can just let them grow and risk them breaking or you can do it the right way. As your nails grow you have to shape them and take a bit of length once in a while to allow them to grow strong and also don't forget about the cuticles and hydrating your skin very well. It might not seem like much but it is a bit stressful since it can be something you'll have to keep up with once every 2/3 days or even every day.
They're not very useful. You want to grab something or scratch a spot or need something small to click on something? Short nails don't help.

So, have you made up your mind? Which ones do you like the most?

I hope you're having a great day,
Marta Ribeiro xx
