My Favourite Shows

by - October 25, 2018

Are you looking for a new show to watch? Today, I'm gonna be telling you about my favourite shows at the moment and maybe you'll find something you like.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine
I started watching this show because it was on a Portuguese channel called Fox Comedy and because I hadn't watched the first few episodes I decided to watch them on Netflix and it soon became my absolute favourite show. It follows the work of a police squad from the 99th precinct in Brooklyn. Not only it focuses on the criminal career side of the characters it also lets us into their personal lives. It's funny, every character is built in a really smart way and it touches on problems like racism, sexism, and homophobia. The cast is really diverse and all the actors are very talented and you'll fall in love with every character. If you like funny and quick (20 min episodes) shows then this is the one for you.

Big Mouth
I don't even know how I started watching this or what I was thinking when I started but the truth is, I loved it. It's the kind of show that believe it or not is educational and inappropriate at the same time. It talks about topics of sexuality, puberty, mental illness and just things we all go through in our teenage years. Even though it's kind of "inappropriate" I think it's actually a really good show for young teens because it can be very educational in a way that they understand and can relate because of the kind of language and terms used. If you're a parent you're probably thinking "I'm not gonna show this to my kid" but the truth is, your kid has probably heard and/or spoke the language in the show, you just don't know about it. So trust your teens, they'll love the show and learn from it.

Jane The Virgin
If you haven't been living under a rock then you've probably heard of this show. The show's about Jane, a religious girl who's saving her virginity for her wedding night who happens to be accidentally artificially inseminated. A lot ends up happening throughout the show and its format is just like a telenovela which makes it very different and original. It's funny, dramatic, sad and happy all at the same time and it's a great show for those who like a fun story.

New Girl
Comedies are definitely my favourite genre if you couldn't tell already. New Girl is extremely famous but underrated at the same time. I feel like tons of people know the show but have never watched it. I was reluctant myself because I didn't really know what it was about but I quickly fell in love with it. The story follows a group of friends who all live in the same loft. The story starts when Jess moves into the loft, therefore being the "new girl". She's very happy, positive, full of life and loves to sing which is a complete contrast from the other guys. Again, it's a lightweight and quick show with each episode being around 20 minutes and somewhere in there is a New Girl - Brooklyn Nine-Nine crossover which was absolutely amazing, to say the least.

Created by the wonderful Matt Groening, this show is an adult fantasy comedy that follows the always drunk princess Bean after befriending Elfo, the elf and Luci, the demon. The three of them are always up to no good for Bean's dad's despair. It's a really funny and once again quick show for anyone who loves animated comedies. There are only 10 episodes available at the moment but it's enough to get you hooked and excited for the rest of the first season that will be released next year.

Queer Eye
If you don't know who the Fab 5 are by now you need to start watching Queer Eye. The show is basically 5 gays going around Georgia doing makeovers. Each of them has a different area of expertise and they try to help out the best way they can and make these men feel confident and beautiful. It's not only a makeovers show, but it also touches important subjects like racism and homophobia and it always has a great message of self-love. It's a great show for anyone that likes fashion, beauty or reality shows.

The World's Most Extraordinary Homes
This might be a weird one for you but I love it. It's definitely one of my favourite shows on this list and I love to watch it especially in the morning when I'm having breakfast. The show is hosted by Piers Taylor, an architect and Caroline Quentin, an actress and together they visit the most extraordinary homes in the whole world. Each episode has a theme, in the first season the themes were coast, forest, mountain and underground while the second season revolves around houses from the USA, Portugal, Switzerland and Japan (from my research I could see there were more episodes of season 2 but those aren't available on Netflix here so I was only able to watch those four). I'm such a fan of the show that I freaked out when I saw that one of the episodes was shot here in Portugal. It's an amazing show if you like architecture and interior design.

And that's it for now. I've also been watching a bunch of movies recently so I might do a similar post soon but only with my favourite movies. Would you like to see that?

I hope you're having a great day,
Marta Ribeiro xx
